We’re finding that, for seniors, the idea of going to the doctor with any semblance of regularity can be anxiety-provoking. Typically, they have their routines and stepping outside of that established timeline is not high on their list of things they want to do. Also, it’s estimated that it could be up to 50% of seniors who have white coat syndrome, a condition characterized by stress and anxiety symptoms (high blood pressure and the like) when visiting a doctor’s office.

Let’s explore what may actually be keeping our elderly loved ones away and what you can do to help.

First, has the patient been diagnosed with any progressive disease such as Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia? This could create a new host of wariness as they struggle to process all parts of their life. To do: reassure and expose; get to know their caregiver. Going to your primary doctor is important and making it a part of the routine, and doing so with empathy, will ease the stress.

It could also be that the senior patient lacks trust in the system or doctors in general. The reasons this could be are countless, from a bad experience to embarrassment. How can we make sure that our seniors feel comfortable at their general practitioner or specialty doctor? To do: Take the time to listen and understand. Encourage them to bring along a family member or friend to keep them company.

Another reason seniors play keep away is that they are scared. Sometimes, it’s as simple as that. It’s the fear of the unknown — what results will come up, what tests will be run, what pain they may find themselves in, and more. They don’t want to be poked and prodded and then have to wait forever for results. To do: Assure them that you have thought of these issues and implemented programs and services to help. At RX2Live, we have a number of offerings, from fast (and accurate) diagnostic lab results to thermal imaging machines that quickly and painlessly screen for diseases and disorders.
